Ruby watched the clock all morning.

She couldn’t help it. It made time drag on, 12 o’clock felt like it was days away. It didn’t help that the office was unusually quiet. Alfie Rose, or Big Red as he was otherwise known around town, was tied up in meetings all morning. His looming, disapproving presence didn’t cast a dark cloud over the heads of subordinates, as it tended to do throughout the week. But while for others Big Red was a dark cloud, for Ruby Edwards he felt more like a thunderstorm.

11:56. Could she possibly get away with leaving her desk early? She tried to peek through the thick blinds of Mr. Rose’s office windows, but it was impossible to tell if he was in his office. Ruby didn’t remember seeing him much that morning, except for floating in and out of her periphery as he went from one meeting to the next. 10:00am with Petros Architecture. Then an 11:00am with Engleman Contracting.

11:57. Fuck it, she thought. It might be her one chance to go wild while she still can. As Ruby stood up to grab her purse, Mr. Rose’s door swung open.

When Big Red emerged from the door with his wealthy-looking disciples, he looked like Jesus Christ in a designer business suit. His outfit was so well-tailored that they made his otherwise broad chest and bulged arms looked lean and modest. But Alfie Sr. didn’t catch Ruby’s attention the way his son, Alfie Jr., did. He was a spitting image of his father, minus 30 years of age. Otherwise he was a smooth-skinned, kind-eyed gentleman. Ruby was speechless when she saw him. He never came into the office to see his father.

Alfie Sr. glanced over at Ruby. “Are you going to lunch?” He asked, studying his Jaeger-LeCoultre, its infinite mechanisms giving him the time, day, date, month, year, and lunar phase. “You have two minutes still remaining.” He passed her a huge bundle of paperwork. “Make three copies of each, please. Collated.” Then he was off, his associates scurrying alongside him. Alfie Jr. glanced over his shoulder, giving poor Ruby a piteous smile. He shrugged, then ran down the hall to catch up with his father. Ruby smiled too, warmed by his subtle benevolence.

After Ruby made over a hundred pages worth of copies, she stapled and stacked the documents in a neat pile on her desk. That was when she spotted Suzy bustling towards her. She was a petite, pale-skinned beauty, but timid as all hell. When Ruby caught her eye, she waved her over.

Suzy can barely look Ruby in the eyes. “Yes, Miss Edwards?”

Ruby rolled her eyes. “Please,” she said. “Call me Ruby.”

Suzy smiled meekly. “Is there something I can help you with, Ruby?”

“Can you make sure Mr. Rose gets these contracts?” She asked, pointing to the large stack on the desk. “He’s expecting them and I’m going to lunch.”

Suzy frowned. “Ruby, I don’t feel comfortable having such a major responsibility like that. I mean, what if Big Red flips out and yells at me?”

Ruby winced.
